Early-Bird Registration for Midwest Conference on 21st Century Policing




Here’s the date and location: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7th at the University of Wisconsin at Platteville, in Velsy Commons, 8 am to 3 pm. Pre-registration is required and there is no charge and lunch will be provided for those who register before September 28th. YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER TO ATTEND THIS CONFERENCE.

7:00 – 8:30 am Registration

8:30 – 8:45 am Welcome and Conference Overview & Expectations: UW-Platteville senior official and Prof. Nino Amato, Conference Moderator: Lecturer in the Department of Criminal Justice, UW-Platteville

8:45 – 9:00 am Introduction of the Conference Speakers: Professor Emeritus Herman Goldstein, UW-Madison Law School and Cheri Maples, Captain, Madison Police Department (Ret.) and former Asst. Attorney General, State of Wisconsin.

9:00 -10:00 am Implementing the Task Force Recommendations Applicable to Local Government: Susan Rahr: Director of Police Training (Washington state) and member of President Obama’s task force; Respondent: Dr. Frank King, Assistant Professor in the Ethnic Studies Program, UW-Platteville

10:00 – 11:00 am Police Services “Outside the Box” in Kalamazoo: Capt. Jim Mallery, Kalamazoo Police Department; Respondent: Dr. Sabina Burton, Associated Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice, UW-Platteville

11:00-11:15 am Midmorning Break

2:15 to 3:15 pm Conference Wrap-Up: Making and Sustaining Change: David Couper, Chief of Police (Ret.), Madison Police Department

3:15 pm Conference ends

3:30 pm Optional: Facilitated Group Discussion between participants and conference speakers for those who wish to continue the conversation

What you can expect: To learn about the Task Force and the recommendations it made pertaining to local government, some examples of 21st century policing, learn about Graham v. Connor and the legal and moral use of deadly force by police, and “first steps” that you and your city or county can take togethher to rebuild trust in police.
