A Warning

Regardless of who wins tomorrow’s election, I am afraid we in America will be tested in ways we have never seen nor experienced before.

Whatever the outcome of this election, I believe our nation’s police (and I would add, military) will play a critical role in stabilizing the nation and upholding our historical, and sacred, democratic values.

Police matter and good police, and the systems in which they work, are essential to support and maintain a free, diverse, and democratic society such as ours.

Let us pray for a fair and peaceful election; respect and peacefully follow our Constitution and civic laws and be sure to VOTE!

I served over 20 years as the chief of police in Madison (WI), four years as chief of the Burnsville (MN) Police Department, and before that as a police officer in Edina (MN) and the City of Minneapolis. I hold graduate degrees from the University of Minnesota and Edgewood College in Madison. I have written many articles over my years as a police leader. After retiring from the police department, I answered a call to ministry, attended seminary, and was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church.   2. When you look at the history of policing and the military, they have never been the guardians of Democracy. They were illegally spying on American citizens and organizations, crushing striking workers and labor unions, destroying various left wing movements, and wishing that the US Constitution had been thrown in the trashcan a long time ago.

      1. Well, that won’t happened due to last night. You yourself spent a life time of trying to get your fellow officers to change but it didn’t happen no matter which political party was in charge of the city, county, state and at the federal level.
